History

English immigrants who had been living in Hempstead, Long Island moved to the lower Hudson Valley west of the Hudson River in the 1700’s, an area originally settled by the Dutch. Needing a church where English was spoken, they established the New Hempstead Presbyterian Church in 1734.  As the first English language church west of the Hudson River, it became known as the English Church. Since the church stood at the intersection of two important roads at that time; north-south between Kings Ferry and Tappan, and west to Suffern, it was also known as the Church at the Crossroads.  It is the second oldest church in Rockland County, and the present sanctuary dates back to 1828.
